“People who enjoy meetings should not be in charge of anything”-Thomas Sowell.
Leaders succeed by respecting their team’s time and not wasting it or their energy. Most meetings in our organizations are either unnecessary or not well-planned or executed. A few tips for the week as you survey your meeting schedule…
– What is the purpose of the meeting, and does it have to happen at all?
– Meetings are best employed for collaboration and ideation. Updates are for emails or Slack. Meetings should be about interaction and collaboration…not just reporting out. Use your team’s precious time for good purposes.
– Enforce good meeting governance. Agendas distributed in advance, affirm the meeting purpose, have it recorded or scribed, and always leave time for summing up and allocating responsibility for follow-ups.
Do yourself and your team a favor this week…Cancel a less-than-necessary meeting and reward your team with getting some of their time back.
